Import Your Outlook Messages Into Apple Mail

If you've ever tried to import your Outlook email messages from your PC to your Apple computer you may have noticed that the native Apple Mail application does not support Outlook file formats. This tutorial will show you how you to import your Outlook messages into Mozilla Thunderbird and then import your Thunderbird messages into Apple Mail.

For this lesson you will need a removable storage disk such as a USB key so you can copy and move files from your Windows PC to your Apple computer.

To move these messages from Outlook to Apple Mail, we must first import them into Mozilla Thunderbird to convert them into a format supported by Apple Mail.

If you do not have Mozilla Thunderbird installed on your PC, you can download and install Mozilla Thunderbird from the following URL: http://www.mozillamessaging.com/en-US/thunderbird/

Next, using Windows Explorer (to open Windows Explorer go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > Windows Explorer), we need to browse to the folder where Mozilla Thunderbird has stored the email messages so they can be copied to a USB key.

If you are using Windows Vista or Windows 7, the imported Outlook data will be located in the following directory:

C:\Users\*username*\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles\*profilename*.default\Mail

Windows XP users can find the imported data in the following directory:

C:\Documents and Settings\*username*\Application Data\Thunderbird\Profiles\*profilename*.default\Mail

In the screenshot above, I'm using Windows XP and my imported Local Folders are located in C:\Documents and Settings\tacker\Application Data\Thunderbird\Profiles\hc02yzgm.default\Mail

Right click on the Local Folders containing your imported data and select Copy.
