Do you already have an address book in an email program on your computer that you would like to use in our webmail system? This tutorial will step you through importing your existing address book into our webmail system for your convenience.
Please note the webmail address book has a limit of 500 entries.
The first step is to export your address book into a format that can be imported by webmail. Instructions for Microsoft Outlook, Outlook Express, and Mozilla Thunderbird are provided below.
Click on the File menu and select Import and Export.
Select "Export to a file" and click Next.
Select "Comma Separated Values (Windows)" and click Next.
Select Contacts and click Next again.
Click on Browse.
Type in a file name and choose a location on your computer to save the address book file then click OK.
Click Next.
Click Finish. The file has been exported and is ready to be imported into webmail.
Click on the File menu, select Export, then click on Address Book.
Select "Text File (Comma Separated Values)" then click on Export.
Type in a name for the exported file then click on Browse to choose a folder to save it in.
Click Save after choosing a folder to save the file in.
Click Next.
Click Finish.
Click OK. You're now ready to import the file into webmail!
Click on the Tools menu and select Address Book.
From the Address Book window click on Tools and select Export.
Choose a folder to save your exported file into, type in a file name, select Comma Separated from the "Save as type" drop-down list , then click on Save.
Your address book file is ready to be imported into webmail now.
Under Address Book, click on All.
Click on Manage Contacts.
1. Under the Import tab, select one of the following program file types from the drop-down list:
Outlook 2000 (*.csv)
Outlook 2003 (*.csv)
Outlook Express (*.csv)
Thunderbird (*.csv)
2. After selecting the appropriate program, click on the Browse button to locate the file.
Select the file that you exported earlier then click on Open.
Adding the imported contacts to an existing webmail address book group is optional.
Click on the Import button.
The new contacts have been uploaded and added to the existing address book in webmail!

You don't mean to tell me that the only way I can upload my computer address book is in CSV format? I use Apple. I am tired of beating my head against Windows users. Next I won't renew my account.
Jeff - thanks for the feedback. Adding support for additional address book file formats is a great feature request for us to consider.
I have a workaround for any Apple Mail users who want to import their address books into Hover webmail. You can use the following program to convert an Apple address book into CSV format:
http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/internet_utilities/addressbooktocsvexporter.html
The program was primarily designed for Gmail users (Gmail also uses CSV format for address books), but it should still work with Hover webmail if you use the program to save your address book as a CSV file then use our instructions to import the CSV file.
I cannot see the import/export button as shown in the screenshot. I have hunted around and cannot see this feature anywhere? I logged into Standard. Is it because I am using Chrome?
Only things on that bar are [send mail][delete][view all]
cheers
The supported browsers for the Import/Export function are Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox. Other browsers such as Opera, Safari, and Google Chrome cannot use this feature at this time.
I honestly do not understand why there is a limit of 500 entries in the address book.
I have 2700+ contacts on Facebook, 500+ contacts on Linked In, 7000+ emails stored on Plaxo, and I work for the government over here, so I easily have 500+ co-workers I can mail occasionally.
Is there a way to increase the number of contacts to say 10.000 or 15.000 ?
What is most frustrating, is that this is a paying service - more rigid than some free services !
@ Brecht - Sorry, at this time I'm not able to increase your number of webmail contacts to 10,000 or 15,000. I have sent a suggestion to our developers as a feature request to make the webmail address book larger.
Your Hover email services are fully compatible with both POP and IMAP (this is something you won't get from the free services you listed). If you use IMAP to access your email in Microsoft Outlook then you'll be able to use your Plaxo address book with your Hover email address. I strongly recommend IMAP if you need to access email on multiple devices that you own, such as a desktop, laptop, iPhone, work PC, etc. IMAP will synchonize all of your messages and folders between our server and all the email clients that you use.
Webmail is primarily intended for checking email on public computer systems. Our webmail service is very basic, but it will allow you to send and receive messages to small groups of people. Also, since we are not a mass mailing service, we don't want to encourage spammers to sign up and use our webmail to send an email to 15,000 people! If you need to send email to that many individuals at a time, then you'd be better off using a mass mailing service like MailChimp for those outbound messages (see http://www.hover.com/mailchimp for more information). MailChimp offers both free and paid accounts.
You are absolutely correct that there are "free" services with larger address books. Our business model is to provide memorable, personal email addresses from our portfolio of premium domain names, and to provide domain registration services with all the basics included (domain privacy, unlimited domain forwarding, and full DNS control). You won't find any banner ads on the Hover website or in our webmail system and if you need help you can call us and talk to a real human being. And we don't outsource! We want our customers to speak to us directly.
I don't expect that we are going to reinvent the wheel and replace other great services on the Internet, but I believe we do include a lot of value in the services we offer.
Thanks for taking the time to give us your feedback!
