GoDaddy - Complete Tutorial

This tutorial will step you through preparing a domain at GoDaddy for a transfer to Hover.

A Word of Warning

Please be warned that GoDaddy will disable hosting, email, DNS, and URL forwarding services after your transfer away has been approved. If you rely on any of these GoDaddy services for your domain name, please contact help@hover.com or call us at +1.866.731.6556 so we can help you set up Hover services before your transfer is initiated.

Domain Transfer Restrictions

Domain transfers will be outright rejected if:

* the domain name is locked (this tutorial will show you how to unlock your domain name)

* the domain name was registered or transferred in the past 60 days

* the authorization code provided is invalid (this tutorial will show you how to obtain the authorization code)

* the domain name is in redemption

* there is an unresolved domain dispute (a form of registrar lock)

* you have GoDaddy's Domain Ownership Protection service turned on for the domain name

In additon to these standard restrictions, GoDaddy also initiates a 60-day lock from transferring your domain when you update the Organization field in your domain registration records or, if you have not listed an organization, when you update the First Name or Last Name fields.

This tutorial applies to the following top-level domains:

.com
.net
.info
.org
.tv
.us
.me
.biz
.tel

Other top-level domains, such as .AT domains, have a slightly different transfer process. For example, you do not need to unlock .AT domain names or obtain an authorization code.

You can use the chart below as a guide for top-level domain specific rules (click on the image to zoom in):

*The .UK and .CA registries only allow domain privacy if the domain registrant / owner is an individual. Organizations cannot have privacy enabled.

Step-By-Step Screenshots

Visit http://www.godaddy.com and log in with your customer number and password.

Select the My Account tab then click on Domain Manager.

Click on the domain name that you are transferring to Hover.

Look for Privacy under Domain Enhancements then click on Manage.

A Domains By Proxy log in screen will pop up in a new window. Log in with your Domains By Proxy customer number and password.

Put a check next to the domain name to be transferred and then click on Cancel Selected.

Click OK to confirm.

Click OK again.

The domain will be removed from the list of domains in your Domains By Proxy account.

Close the Domains By Proxy window to return to your GoDaddy Domain Manager page.

Click on the Domain Manager link at the top left hand corner to return to the main screen of your Domain Manager.

Put a check next to the domain name to be transferred, click on the Contact button, and select Set Contacts.

Select the Administrator tab and enter your new administrator email address in the Email address: text field. Click OK.

A word of caution: do not change the Organization or First name and Last name fields. GoDaddy will enable a 60 day transfer lock because it is considered a domain ownership change.

It may take approximately 30 minutes for your changes to be updated. Click OK.

Put a check next to the domain name to be transferred and then click on Locking.

Uncheck Lock domains then click OK.

The domain has been unlocked. This may take a few minutes to update. Click OK.

Click on the domain name that you are transferring to Hover.

Look for the Authorization Code: line under Domain Information then click on Send by Email.

Click OK.

Click OK again. In a few minutes you should receive an email from GoDaddy containing your transfer authorization code.

Log Into Your Email for Your Authorization Code

Media_1291335426443_display

Check your email for a message with your authorization code. If you haven't received the email yet, then updates to your email address may not have finished propagating.

Check WHOIS Propagation

If you made changes to your domain contact information, use a WHOIS look up tool to verify that the new contact information has propagated. Changes to domain names might take a couple of hours to appear. You can perform a WHOIS look up using the following websites: http://www.smartwhois.com/ or http://whois.domaintools.com/

Bring Your Domain to Hover

Now that your domain is prepared for the transfer, you can start the process of bringing the domain to Hover. Click on this link for a step by step tutorial.

Approve Your Transfer at GoDaddy (Optional Step)

If you do nothing, pending domain transfers will be approved automatically after 5 days. If you don't want to wait, these instructions will show you how to approve pending transfers from the GoDaddy website.

Media_1291335815208_display

Click on the Domains tab and click on Pending Transfers.

Media_1291335939782_display

Put a check next to the domain name that you are transferring to Hover and then click on the Accept/Decline button.

Select Accept then click OK.

Click OK. The transfer has been approved. It may still take a few days for the transfer to be completed.

After your transfer has been completed, you will receive a Congrats! email like the one above.

Wonderful! Thanks for taking the time to do this step-by-step walkthrough - Just looking through those screenshots makes me confirm my thoughts of GoDaddy.. look at it! ADverts on Adverts, and barriers left, right and centre!

Looking forward to becoming a Hover.com customer.

One step that is missing...

If you have Domain Ownership Protection on your Domain, you have to call GoDaddy customer service to cancel the service before you can transfer or remove Privacy, etc. This process can take several days and documentation proving your identity, so plan accordingly.

@Laura - Thanks for pointing that out! We've added a new step titled "Verify that you do not have Domain Ownership Protection turned on!"

Great tutorial ... I waited to the last minute but was able to get it all done in one sitting anyway. Without this guide, would have not been able to figure out on the fly the hoops through which to jump and would have ended up having to renew with the GoDaddy another year.

Thanks again!

Can I just say that was an amazing PITA and validates again why moving to Hover is essential? Thank you for holding my hand. The only change to your docs I might add is to recommend folks transfer all their domains simultaneously since this is such a royal hassle. Course they might think you're being self-serving, but it's -my- only regret at this moment. Now I have to walk through it again for the rest of my domains.

Thanks much for the detailed instructions. Really makes me trust your service that while you offer a way to pay and have you do it for me, you've given me all the tools to do it myself if I wish.
