Network Solutions - Complete Tutorial

This tutorial will step you through preparing a domain at Network Solutions for a transfer to Hover.

A Word of Warning

Please be warned that Network Solutions will disable hosting, email, DNS, and URL forwarding services after your transfer away has been approved. If you rely on any of these Network Solutions services for your domain name, please contact help@hover.com or call us at +1.866.731.6556 so we can help you set up Hover services before your transfer is initiated.

Domain Transfer Restrictions

Domain transfers will be outright rejected if:

* the domain name is locked (this tutorial will show you how to unlock your domain name)

* the domain name was registered or transferred in the past 60 days

* the authorization code provided is invalid (this tutorial will show you how to obtain the authorization code)

* the domain name is in redemption

* there is an unresolved domain dispute (a form of registrar lock)

In addition to these restrictions, Network Solutions places a 30-day lock on domain names when there is a change in either the Primary or WHOIS Administrative Contact. If your account information is out of date and has to be updated, this will delay your transfer by 30 days.

This tutorial applies to the following top-level domains:

.com
.net
.info
.org
.tv
.us
.me
.biz
.tel

Other top-level domains, such as .AT domains, have a slightly different transfer process. For example, you do not need to unlock .AT domain names or obtain an authorization code.

You can use the chart below as a guide for top-level domain specific rules (click on the image to zoom in):

*The .UK and .CA registries only allow domain privacy if the domain registrant / owner is an individual. Organizations cannot have privacy enabled.

Enter your User ID and Password then click on Login.

Verify that the contact information in your user profile is current

Click on My Domain Names.

Ensure Domain Privacy is Disabled

Check whether private registration is enabled for the domain being transferred. If the domain is set to Private, click on Turn Private Registration off.

Select Turn Private Registration off then click Go.

Verify That Your Account and Domain Contact Information is Correct

Click on the Account Settings tab.

Click on User Profile.

Scroll down and check your User Profile email address for accuracy. If the address is out of date, click on Edit User Profile.

Under Edit Account Information, enter your current email address.

After making changes to your email address, scroll down and click Save.

Check Your Domain WHOIS Contact Information

Using a public whois website, check whether or not you need to update your domain's administrative contact email address. Here are two services you can use:

http://smartwhois.com
http://whois.domaintools.com

In the screenshot above, I used smartwhois.com to check the admin email address for hideandseekolympics.com.

If your email address does not need to be changed, please skip down to the section titled "Acquire Your Domain Authorization Code." If your admin email address is out of date, it should be updated prior to transfer.

Please be advised, Network Solutions places a 30-day lock on domain names when there is a change in either the Primary or WHOIS Administrative Contact. This step is necessary but will require you to wait 30 more days before you can initiate your transfer to Hover.

Update WHOIS Contact - ONLY IF NECESSARY

Click on the Account Settings tab.

Now that we've verified that your profile email address is correct, we need to ensure that your domain name's administrative email address is the same.

Click on WHOIS Contacts.

Put a check next to the domain name being transferred, then click Edit.

Select WHOIS Administrative Contact then click Go.

Select Yourself (this is the user profile contact information you checked earlier) and then click on Continue.

Acquire Your Domain Authorization Code

From the Account Manager page, click on My Products & Services.

Click on My Domain Names.

Scroll down to the Manage section for the domain name being transferred.

Across from Domain Protect:, click on Turn Off or Request Authorization Code.

Select Leave Domain Protect off and put a check next to Request Authorization Code. Click Save.

Your authorization code will be sent by email to your account profile email address.

Check your email inbox for a message from Network Solutions and record your authorization code.

Bring Your Domain to Hover

Now that your domain is prepared for the transfer, you can start the process of bringing the domain to Hover. Click on this link for a step by step tutorial.

Approve Your Transfer at Network Solutions (Optional Step)

If you do nothing, pending domain transfers will be approved automatically after 5 days. If you don't want to wait, the following instructions will show you how to approve pending transfers.

Click on the link in the Transfer Confirmation Request email from Network Solutions.

Select Confirm then click Submit.

Network Solutions will provide a summary of the approved transfer. It may still take a few days for your domain transfer to be completed.
